Summary

I conducted a future’s research activity generating “What If” scenarios to integrate current tasks with potential new capabilities resulting in a dashboard serving as the foundation to explore visually integrating various data sources.

Insight

  • Concept development is more than visualization, it is problem scoping addressing business growth and risk management.

Outcome

Starting with future scenarios allowed us to develop a common framework to examine the platform’s current features and desired future capabilities which identified gaps in required functionality. Building the future dashboard artifact helped align the project’s scope while providing a common model to build from and expand features based on task and workflow initiatives.

Lessons Learned

  • Design can start anywhere in an iterative process, the key is collaboration and continuous feedback integration.

  • Subject Matter Experts are a great source of domain knowledge, just remember their experiences is just one data point, don’t undervalue junior colleagues

  • High fidelity mockups often produce a finished feeling that can prevent people form providing feedback, overlaying the mock up with simple diagrams produces a blueprint mindset that encourages further discussion

Design Artifact: High Fidelity Mockup

Future Thinking Artifact

A hi-fi mockup visualizing asset KPI and system performance while integrating with known workflows. The mockup presents provides an status section, central display area, and tool panel allowing operators to quickly examine an asset's status and perform need tasks.
